Children's Education Programs

The Brashear Association offers enrichment opportunities for Hilltop youth during afterschool, Saturday and summer programming with a focus on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math), healthy lifestyles and community engagement.

Visit our Education department headquarters at the Allentown Learning Engagement Center (ALEC) on Warrington Avenue to learn more about our programs, field trips and ways to get involved.

Allentown After School Academy

Allentown After School Academy offers families with children in 2nd through 5th grade two hours of enrichment programming, four days a week. Youth receive homework assistance, a healthy snack, educational activities from community partners like Venture Outdoors, YMCA Creator Space, Strong Women Strong Girls, Carnegie Library, etc, and ample free play to support their positive development.

Food Clubs

Brashear sponsors two food clubs in Hilltop communities including a monthly club for 4th and 5th graders at Grandview PreK-5 and for 6-8th graders at Arlington K-8. Food club includes a cooking demonstration and food systems education to support local youth in making healthy food choices, empowering them to prepare their own meals with a garden to table mindset.

Opera Connections

Children in grades 3, 4 and 5 (and their parents) can experience the excitement of the Pittsburgh Opera together! Participants learn about the basics and history of opera through pre-show workshops, backstage tours and two free performances throughout the year!

Summer Programs

All camps are completely FREE and run Monday through Thursday from 12-4pm with a healthy snack provided daily.

Art Camp

Two weeks of art making with short, daily skill building exercises paired with weekly community based projects prepares youth, ages 8-13 for CAPA applications and exposes them to art within and about our community.

Tech Camp with YMCA Creator Space

Get hands on with circuits, motors, coding and more in this two week camp focused on STEM education.

Venture Outdoors Camp

Two-weeks of outdoor learning including hiking, biking and kayaking! Explore Pittsburgh and our natural resources. Wear your sunscreen!

Gardening Camp

How does the ALEC garden grow? Learn about our local ecosystem while getting dirty in the ALEC garden beds for this one week camp.
